Ranata Shlobin’s Message, 10/10/25
October 9, 2025“It is not for you to complete the task, but neither are you free to turn away from it.”
- (Pierkei Avot – Ethics of our Fathers 2:16)
Over the past 23 months, our congregation has come together to support Israeli individuals and families facing immense hardship and loss due to October 7th and the ongoing attacks on Israel. Through the Israel Emergency Action Fund, Temple Shaaray Tefila has given financial assistance, created personal connections and provided reminders that these families are not alone.
Those we Have Helped
We carefully vetted each case and shared it, so that our giving was as direct and meaningful as possible. Here are just some of the courageous people and families we have helped:
- Michelle Rukavitsin: At just 23, Michelle was gravely wounded while serving on the Gaza border. After surviving near-fatal injuries—including losing her eye and suffering a brain injury—Michelle has undergone 15 surgeries, months in a coma, and is now paralyzed on one side. Thanks to your contributions, her family has been able to remain by her side through her recovery, and she continues rehabilitation with remarkable perseverance. Michelle and her boyfriend had a Wedding planned for September 30th, so she is trying hard to re-learn to walk, at least a little bit.
- The Golan Family of Kfar Aza: Ariel, a social worker; Ellay, a physician; and their baby daughter Yael survived a harrowing attack while hiding in their safe room. Severely burned and hospitalized for weeks, including time in induced comas, all three are now on the long road of recovery. The community’s support has helped address medical needs and made sure the Golans know they are surrounded by care and solidarity.
- The Epstein Family: This family suffered the catastrophic loss of several loved ones in the October 7 attacks, including multiple generations. Their resilience in rebuilding their lives, while carrying profound grief, has been met with our congregation’s financial and emotional backing, affirming that their pain is seen and shared.
- Gali Segal and Ben Binyamin: A young couple maimed while escaping the Nova Music Festival, Gali and Ben both lost their right legs during the attack. Contributions from our fund have aided their ongoing surgeries, rehabilitation, and emotional healing, helping them look forward to the future together despite unimaginable challenges. Gali and Ben were married last September.
- Ori Reches: A 20-year-old IDF sharpshooter, Ori sustained multiple life-changing injuries on the battlefield, requiring over a year of medical care and future surgeries. The emotional and financial support from our community has lightened the burdens for Ori and his devoted family. Ori continues to require numerous surgeries, and may come to NY to the Hospital for Special Surgery if possible.
- Ofek Vaxman: After surviving a direct rocket hit at his home, Ofek, who is on the autism spectrum, is now paralyzed from the waist down. He remains hospitalized with his father by his side as his caretaker. Your generosity has helped ensure Ofek and his family are not struggling alone.
- Ora Hatan and Northern Border Families: In addition to those physically harmed, your contributions have helped single mother Ora Hatan, who courageously remained in her town on the Lebanese border, single-handedly, to cook daily for over 200 soldiers. Our gifts support her mission to nourish and give strength to those defending Israel.
- The Soroka Hospital: In the early hours of June 19, an Iranian ballistic missile struck Soroka Medical Center’s central campus, causing significant structural damage. The blast led to the collapse of department floors, pharmacies, and laboratories, injuring nearly 100 patients and staff, and forcing the suspension of most medical services. As the only major hospital in the South, this was a serious crisis for vulnerable communities still recovering from the 10/7 attacks. Thanks to the generosity of a TST donor, we have contributed $10,000 to the American Friends of Soroka Hospital to help with rebuilding.
Together, We Make a Difference
As a congregation, we have affirmed our bond with the people of Israel, one family at a time. These gifts meet urgent material needs and they send a powerful message of hope and unity, helping survivors reconstruct their lives and communities.

Thank you for your compassion and collective action.
