A Positive Trend in a Time of Distress
Amid the ongoing concern for the wellbeing of Israel and over resurgent antisemitism, a recent New York Times article offers a glimmer of hope. The article, "How October 7 Changed American Jews," describes "In a year of trauma, many Jews have found support in the deep wells of history, community, and faith." This is a trend we witness at Temple Shaaray Tefila -- as I have seen in my previous congregations.
The article went on to describe a recent survey that finds "Since the October 7 attack, more than four in 10 American Jews have either sought out or engaged more with Jewish life." About "a third" of "the surge" includes those not previously participating. Specifically, our Reform movement is receiving a substantial uptick in interest in conversion, Hillel International reports a yearly increase of 17 percent in participation, and Sefaria, the online Jewish text resource I use in Torah Study and other Temple programs, reports sustained engagement of 800,000 monthly visitors, up 30 percent year-to-year. And we witness similar trends here, at Temple Shaaray Tefila in the energy and enthusiasm that our members, especially new members, bring.
Our well received High Holy Day family services are attended by increased numbers. Shabbat Torah Study participation is consistent and strong. Our Religious School and Early Childhood Center programs resonate with those seeking a positive and affirming experience for their children and families. A renewed Cafe Shaaray Sunday morning program is off to a strong start. Looking ahead, I will be delighted to welcome you to services for Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah and, of course, each Shabbat. As the article maintains, "families seek not just safety amid rising antisemtism, but also new connections, especially following the coronavirus pandemic." The new conditions of Jewish life -- the combined crises involving Israel and antisemitism -- on top of the challenges of absorbing the ongoing communal and spiritual impact of Covid, are leading to renewed energy and participation in Jewish communities.
How I wish that the world was not in the condition it is in! Yet, I take personal comfort from the commitment and devotion that you, the members of the Temple Shaaray Tefila community, lift up each time you come here. I look forward to seeing you here, again and again, as we move forward into 5785.
With wishes from house to house for a peaceful and healthy New Year.
Rabbi Dennis Ross
