Civil Rights Journey
March 6, 2025Rabbi Ross’ Message 03/14/25
March 12, 2025More than 50 Reform congregations in Israel are fighting every day to support and sustain their nation during this war. Rabbis and congregations are caring for former hostages, their loved ones, relatives of fallen IDF soldiers and those who continue to serve in uniform, children traumatized by the ongoing conflict and missile attacks and more. Your vote in the World Zionist Congress election will provide funding and support for Israeli Reform Jews during this hour of great need. They are urgently seeking our help and votes. Voting runs from March 10 to May 4.
While the Reform Movement is the largest Jewish denomination in North America, we are a minority in Israel of just 8% – partly due to the lack of government funding in comparison to Orthodox communities. Your votes bring funds that are crucial to survive, thrive, and further our core values of democracy, freedom, pluralism, and security and champion a different vision of what it means to be Jewish in the Jewish State.
The World Zionist Organization (WZO) and the World Zionist Congress (WZC) are Israeli nongovernmental institutions. The WZC convenes every five years to decide key issues affecting the Jewish people, and allocate about $1 billion annually in Israel. Our opponents in the WZC election – ultra-orthodox religious fundamentalists – have a vision for the future of Israel that is diametrically opposed to ours. They are determined to put Israeli Reform congregations out of business, keep women out of public life, deny Reform weddings and conversions, prevent their children from receiving proper science and math education, and more. Many of their young refuse IDF service, with the expectation that members of the Reform community and other Israelis will serve and sacrifice on their behalf. By voting in this election, you can stand up for our Reform partners in Israel and ensure that they have the funding and support to carry on during these most challenging of times.
Israel’s Reform Movement is represented at the WZC by ARZA (the Association of Reform Zionists of America) and the international Reform Zionist organization (ARZENU). ARZA supports the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMPJ) and the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC).
Thanks to our hard work and success in previous elections:
- $20 million over 5 years goes to our movement in Israel.
- Same-sex partners of fallen soldiers receiving crucial death benefits.
- Patrilineal Jews fallen in battle or murdered by terrorists on 10/7 are receiving full Jewish burial inside Jewish cemeteries, rather than being degraded in death and buried outside the fence.
- Women are advancing in the IDF
Voting runs from March 10 – May 4, 2025!
