Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day 2021, the Shaaray Tefila Green Team would like to share what the Temple is doing to become more sustainable and to provide our congregants with some actionable ideas to do the same.

Community Solar -- One of the most impactful actions to take is to support renewable energy in New York State. The Temple is leading the way, having signed up for Community Solar. When you do that through your home utility, you also enable more solar energy in NYS AND reduce your electricity bill by 10%, just like the Temple. It’s easy to do and there is no cost to enroll or leave the program at any time. Sign up through Sustainable Westchester here.

Tree & Native Plant Planting -- As we are doing through our Temple Beautification Day (May 2nd), help drawdown carbon by planting native trees and plants at your home. Source your plantings through nurseries that specialize in native plants (Native Landscapes in Pawling, NY or Earth Tones in Woodbury, CT, for example) or go to your preferred nursery and specifically request native trees and plants (Pound Ridge Nursery in Pound Ridge, NY, Perennial Gardens in Bedford Village, NY or Rosedale in Hawthorne, NY, for example).

Energy Efficiency Audit -- The Temple had an energy audit in the fall of last year and is getting bids from providers to help us become more energy efficient, particularly with our heating and air conditioning systems and controls. You too can have an expert suggest the best things you can do in your home to reduce your energy use and to be more comfortable. More resources for this can be found through NYSERDA or Bedford 2030. Here.

Drive Down your Emissions -- Many people are reducing their carbon footprint by choosing an electric vehicle when buying or leasing a new car. You can also make an impact with your current car by making sure your tires are properly inflated and that you are combining trips to reduce your driving miles. There’s so much news lately on the huge trend by manufacturers and states to increase their electric vehicle offerings and add more vehicle charging stations.

Join Us -- Want to increase your impact? Join the Green Team like our newest member, Beth Metzger! We would love to have you in any way you have time to give. Email ksabath@gmail.com to let us know.

Let’s make every day Earth Day!
