Life Long Jewish Learning

Lifelong Jewish Learning

We believe that learning is a lifelong pursuit. We provide opportunities for congregants of all ages and at many levels of Jewish knowledge.

  • TORAH STUDY: Saturday mornings from 9:15am to 10:30am, join Rabbis Nevarez and Roberts to discuss the weekly Torah portion. The Torah Study session is preceeded at 9am by a short worship service. No need to RSVP, and never an admission charge.
  • JEWISH STUDIES: We provide classes in various aspects of Jewish history, life and culture. Call the Temple office at (914) 666-3133 for the next series of classes.
  • MOVIES: Occasional Sunday evenings at 7:00pm feature a film related to a Jewish theme. The movies are followed by dessert and discussion.
  • LUNCH AND LEARN: Once a month we bring in captivating outside lecturers for an hour of study after a catered lunch. Open to everyone in the community.   Call the Temple office for a schedule and program specifics.
  • FORUM WITH THE RABBI: Each Monday at noon, one of our Rabbis or other professional staff explore an aspect of Judaism over a relaxing lunch. Topics range from holidays to Jewish text to current events. No RSVP is necessary.
  • BOOK CLUB: Once each month, we us meet to discuss a book with a Jewish theme or content.
  • HOLIDAYS: As each Jewish holiday approaches, one of the rabbis or other professional staff offers unique insights into the practical ways we can incorporate holidays into our own lives.
  • ADULT B'NAI MITZVAH: Not every Jewish adult was Bar or Bat Mitzvah at age 13, and it’s never too late to celebrate this incredible milestone! Led by Rabbi Greenberg, our Adult B’nai Mitzvah class is a two year experience which includes both Hebrew reading instruction and Jewish learning. The culmination of the class is a B’nai Mitzvah service, where students’ achievements are recognized by the congregation. We have had students participate ranging in age from 18 to 80, all of who are incredibly grateful for this opportunity. Classes start every other year. The 2011-2013 class begins November 10th. • ADULT CONFIRMATION:Jewish learning doesn’t end when one becomes a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We believe that adults should also have the opportunity for continued and meaningful learning. This year-long Adult Confirmation class, led by Rabbi Nevarez, explores our foundational Hebrew texts and rabbinic literature, while drawing upon current events, ritual, personal Jewish journeys, and other topics of interest. Classes start every other year. The 2011-2012 class begins October 18th. Click here for details.
  • HOLOCAUST EDUCATION ACTIVITIES: Understanding the Holocaust and its significance for our lives today is a challenge for both children and adults. Temple Shaaray Tefila encourages intergenerational exploration of the Holocaust through a number of programs including: topical lectures, photography exhibits, survivor testimony and pairing programs, and field trips to area museums and performances. Members and visitors are encouraged to walk the Temple’s grounds and view the Holocaust memorial and trees planted in memory of Holocaust survivors. The centerpiece of our Holocaust education outreach is our annual Yom HaShoah service. Beginning with a candlelight procession of our religious school students, this service is an intense and spiritual experience. It includes topical music, recognition of the congregation’s survivors and their children, and first person testimony.
