Lifelong Learning | Youth Programs ToaSTY B'nai Mitzvah Project A significant component of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience is our social action program. It is important for our students to understand that becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah involves tikkun olam--repairing our world. Through this program we hope to instill the responsibility towards “action” by involving our students in interesting and rewarding activities.
Because of this, we require our students to participate in the ToaSTY B'nai Mitzvah Project, with each student engaging in at least three, one-time group social action activities under my direction in addition to an individual mitzvah project. These are safe, appropriate, and well-supervised settings for our children. The activities are gratifying for the volunteers as well as for the recipients of their kindness. For group events, R.S.V.P.'s are required. An explanation and schedule of these events is listed below. If you have a personal interest in an organization not listed for an independent project, please provide me with information, and I will let you know if that program satisfies our requirements. Additionally, I have provided you with a chart that lists every Torah portion with corresponding themes. This chart is a tool to help you find projects that are pertinent to your child's Torah portion and can be used as a springboard to inspire other independent project ideas. Please consider all of your options before making a decision. You should then complete and return the registration sheet to Beth Kerner, Religious School Assistant, as soon as possible by mail or email. Once your child has completed all components of the program, two items must be submitted: the first is a letter of completion from the organization for which the student had volunteered. The second is a one page essay talking about what they did, how they liked the experience, and what they got out of it. This allows us to make sure that all events and organizations continue to enhance the experience for all of our B’nai Mitzvah families. Thank you for your cooperation, and we wish you an enjoyable and meaningful experience. While we do have a minimum of requirements, there is no end to how involved you can become. A mitzvah is not only a good deed but the obligation of every Jew. Forms and Booklets List of Torah Portions and Themes September Sat. 9 - Yom Kipper Food Drive Bag Distribution
