Rosh Hodesh - Its a Girl Thing


Come celebrate Rosh Hodesh, the ancient Jewish holiday marking the new moon and traditional gathering time for Jewish women and girls.

  • A values-based, experiential, and authentically Jewish program.
  • Strengthens the self-esteem and Jewish identity of adolescent girls.
  • Group meets monthly on a Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 (includes dinner).

Themes at a Glance (and meeting dates)
Opening Month:  Welcoming the Group and the Moon
(September 25)

·         Initial meeting to introduce girls to the concept of Rosh Hodesh and of Rosh Hodesh groups

·         Create a comfortable and supportive environment – introducing ourselves and our hopes for the group, creating our Rosh Hodesh ritual cloth

Heshvan:  The Struggles and Joys of Sisterhood
(October 30)

·         Explore the life of our foremother, Rachel, and what we can learn from her about relationships

·         Construct individual midrashim (interpretations) to relate biblical stories to our modern lives

Kislev:  Heroines Past and Present
(November 20)

·         Explore female empowerment in ancient and contemporary times

·         Discuss the stories of women associated with Hanukkah: Hannah and Judith

Tevet:  Body as Temple - Rededication to Self-Appreciation
(December 18)

·         Understand the metaphor from Jewish mystical tradition that likens the human body to the mishkan (the portable tabernacle used before the building of the first Temple)

·         Rededicate ourselves to valuing our bodies and committing to positive thoughts and actions

Shevat:  Nature Meditations and Munchies
(January 29)

·         Explore the nature themes of the Tu B’shevat Seder

·         Discuss personal character traits

Adar:  Megilot of Our Own
(February 26)

·         Explore the role of beauty in the Purim story and in our lives today

·         Analyze images of women in the media and become activists to promote healthy depictions of females in magazines, advertisements, etc.

Nisan:  Miriam - Her Life and Legacy
(March 26)

·         Learn about Miriam by reading and creatively retelling stories about her

·         Explore the notion of healthy and unhealthy risk-taking

·         Decorate our own Kosot Miriam (Miriam’s Cups) for use at the seder

Iyar:  Knowing What Counts
(April 23)

·         Discuss popularity as it relates to status, acceptance, and self-worth

·         Identify personal character goals

Sivan:  Ruth and Naomi - Listening With Your Heart
(May 21)

·         Examine the story of Ruth as a springboard for an exploration of successful friendship

·         Explore effective communication as an essential component of healthy relationships
